As part of students’ curriculum, certain study programs require work experience. Only if the following conditions are met, you can apply for a co-op or intern work permit:
- Have a valid study permit
- Required to work for the completion of the course in Canada.
- Received a letter from the school confirming that a work placement is required for all students to acquire the degree.
- Co-op placement or internship contributes to 50% of your program of study.
In a few situations you may not require a co-op work permit to complete the program of study if you possess a valid study permit and the application was made on or before October 7, 2022. Also, your study permit should show that you are eligible to work off campus and have a temporary policy change to work more than 20 hours weekly. This co-op placement should end by December 31, 2023.
If at all the co-op placement ends after the 31st of December, 2023 or you are not authorized to work under temporary policy change, it is a must to apply for a co-op work permit to cover the period. You could start working on your co-op placement during the period before receival of a permit. There won’t be any effect on any other employment you have.
You wouldn't be eligible for this permit if you are taking English or French as a second language or any of the general interest courses or any pathway courses for another study program. If you are not authorized to work under a co-op work permit and still wish to work in Canada, you can apply for a work-permit. You could apply for the permit depending on the status of your study permit.
Applying online would be of help as there wouldn't be any courier fees or mail delivery time as the application is received instantly. The application processing would be quicker and you could make sure the application is complete, and have all necessary documents before you.The status updates of your application can be known directly in your online account.
